In the recent hullabaloo over the Pope's speech at Regensburg University, Germany, on September 14, the Holy See's defenders have repeatedly insisted that the Pope's comments have been taken out of context and miscontrued. Every article on the topic mentions this, and yet for some reason very few of those articles provide a link to the entire speech. Fortunately, the BBC does, and here it is:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/15_09_06_pope.pdfOkay...I'm reading it...and...it sure looks to me like an indirect attack on Islam. What other purpose could the quote of old Emperor Manuel II Paleologos serve? The speech seems to be about rationality and God, and since Benedict XVI doesn't actually go on to offer any comments on the quote, or to contradict the content of the quote, and in fact goes on to imply that Islam, unlike Christianity, embraces the concept of an irrational God...yep...it's hard to see this is anything but a veiled attack on Islam. Benedict XVI is an extremely articulate and erudite scholar, whatever you think of his policies and views. Presumably, he says what he means and means what he says. This is no Bushism. Benedict XVI put the quote in for a reason, and the fact that he doesn't explicitly say why speaks volumes. Of course, the great irony here is that immediately upon being (implicitly) accused of emracing violence, around the globe a sizable number of Muslims took to the streets to protest this charactization...through violence. Yeah, I know such people do not represent the majority of good Muslims, but you have to admit it is ironic and also sad. Burning effigies? These crowds really go in for burning effigies, don't they? Quite disturbing. But the Pope's cryptic comments are also disturbing. They are also ironic, considering the Catholic Church's own history of imposing its beliefs "by the sword." Since the quote is a few centuries old, it invites comparison with the behavior of the Church in the same period. Ah, religion.

Slightly on a different tangent, but...

I've always wondered about people who react with violence. When I was a little girl and heard about the thing in Watts on TV I wondered... Why are they so mean? Why are they ruining their own neighborhood? So trashing their own town really makes a big point to the other people (who generally don't live there), right? It's like they're saying, "I'll poke my right eye out. That'll show you, eh?" People are strange.

I don't know. I suppose most people expect more out of a religious leader like the Pope...but in the end he's just a man, and an old one at that. I'm sure he has a lot of deep seated prejudices that were instilled in him as he grew up. That and being smart does not necessarily mean that you are fair or good. It's a sad world, isn't it?

...but that's where shoujo manga comes in! We can change the Pope to be good and fair in the shoujo manga...literally make him shine with goodness (and a few well placed roses). People react wihout violence and mend their ways. I like the world of shoujo manga much better. *grin*

Nyanko, thanks for the response. Things have been so quiet on these boards the past few months, I had come to think of them of a place for me to talk out loud to myself. (^_^;)

You're right; the Pope is just a man, as are those who rage in the streets. The potential to do the worst--and best--that any of them could probably resides within us all.

Perhaps that's one reason homo sapiens creates worlds of fiction: as a means to conceive of something better (and in doing so, hold on to sanity).

The news is so consistently grim these days, I find fiction to be vastly preferable to reality (at least the kind of reality that results in lives being lost or shattered).

I agree with the fiction is better than reality thing

I actually found this board today. I don't think I've been on your site for years (I believe it used to have a black background), so there's lots of neat reading Thank you!

As I recall, I temporarily made my background black on three occasions: Bush's election and re-election, and the U.S. invasion of Iraq. These days, if I blackened the background every time some international travesty took place, I'd have to leave it black all the time. (^_^;)

And, yeah, I haven't added much new content in a lo-o-o-ng time. This was once *the* source for English-language info on shoujo manga, but today there are countless sites providing info on what's currently available in English, and since I rarely read manga in English, I couldn't hope to do as good a job as they do. But I hope this site still offers something other sites can't, since I am in something of a unique position. (^_^)

Wow! That was a while back either way!

I think your page is still really useful though. There are LOTS of pages about manga translated in English (which is great) but not many good ones recommending/reviewing manga in the original Japanese. The only other one I know of is Emily's Random Shoujo Manga Page (which was up yesterday, but seems to be down today...btw, I don't particulary like reading manga in English, either *guilty*).

Only I've read most of the recommened ones on your page...and well, was hoping that you still read manga and would maybe post some on this new BBS thing Or maybe that I would find more like-minded people...it's hard to find people in the US who read shoujo manga in Japanese...well, at least it is for me! If nothing else, I might just blabble on about manga I really liked...or something here...if you don't mind. Most of the manga forums I've encountered seem to be "1 Piece RULZ! I LIK 1PIECE!!!!!" ...which doesn't really interest me Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. I don't really want to post on scanslation forums...because I feel rather...ambivalent about them.

Okay, okay! I've rambled on far too much for anyone's good and I was supposed to be replying about the Pope. Yes, the Pope...who looks rather scary to me. He looks like his wrinkles were made from a lifetime of angry expressions. The Pope just before had a more benevolent face, imho...which again has nothing to do with the topic...oh. Sorry

I personally find the implications in the Pope's speech rather sad. In general, I quite respect the Catholic church- it's one of the largest organized religions in the world, and these days they do quite a bit of good via charitable works. But from reading different statements of both the cardinals in the last five or ten years, and the current Pope, it almost seems to me that some of the leadership at the current time have a distressing lack of tolerance for other religions. I mean, aren't they supposed to be embracing ideals of brotherly love and tolerance? But at the same time, they are insulting Islam? *shrug* I really don't get it. Most Catholics I know are very good people... and it almost seems to me that on occasion their leadership lets them down. I respected the previous Pope greatly, despite my disagreeing with his statements on occasion, but this current one rather worries me.

I mean, for all the problems that some extremists have been causing... one of the fastest diaster-relief organizations in the world is the Islamic Relief Fund. For all the evil wrought by some, others try their very best to rectify such situations. And my Muslim friends are as equally kind and considerate (and goofy) as my Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Agnostic, and Hindu friends, etc. I find it extremely offensive to hear such wonderful people being insulted. Tolerance is strained in many areas these days, and having a leader of one of the top three or four largest religions in the world insult the world's largest religious denomination really doesn't help the situation. People looking to excuse bigoted actions to themselves will seize upon statements like this as a justification to perpetuate cruelty and hatred. And while that is most likely not the intention of the Pope, he is a figurehead to a great many people and he cannot not know how his words will come across to some.
