Because it's summer, I would like to bring everybody's attention to the genre that chills away the summer heat-horror. (of course, this is an entirely Asian concept, and horror movies in North America usually target Holloween, but whatever works) Although I don't watch horror movies too often (usually because it's difficult to find a good one), I do enjoy them from time to time, and same is the case with horror comic books as well. Since I can recall very few horror manga in the recent works, please feel free to recommend any other great horror manga you know.Ito Junji's works-Tomie,Uzumaki,Ito Junji short collections, etc. Some of his stories can be a tad typical, but his level of expression is amazing. By that I mean there are very few manga artists who can describe the level of grotesque, bizareness, freakishness, beauty and ugliness as well as he can. Also, his tendency to obsess over extremely mundane everyday objects and turning them into the scariest things through the wierdest method possible can be quite convincing, and might give you fears ofthings like drains, fungus, balloons, snails and etc. (especially with what he does with snails...I personally had no hard feelings against those slimy garden creatures until...)He also seems to have a terrible fearof women...come to think of it, he did say so in an interview. His works can also be wildly hilarious at times.Even if you don't generally read horror, his art is worthwhile seeing, especially if you're into bizarre images. Some of his works are availiable in English.Hyakki Yakoushoby Ima IchikoOkay, I know it's not exactly a horror manga, but itcan besurprisingly creepy and scary.Although the artwork is not as gory or detailed as Ito's (in fact, it's not even violent), theexpression is unique and gives you the kind of chill when you feel like somebody'swatching youand turn around, but nothing's there. Since the theme is very much aboutdifferent kinds of boundaries and the complications with mortalshaving contact with"those who are not alive," perhaps it's not such afar-off explanation of the manga. Personally I found some scenes of the earlier volumes more scarier than a hack-and-slash scene from a splatter horror movie.A perfectchoice if you're into a subtle yet efficient kind of horror, or would just like to see a great manga.Unfortunately, no English versions are availiable, although I think it's a way better choice than some random cookie-cutter fantasy/bishoujo/shonen/etc. manga.Jigoku Sensei Nube,Vampire Princess MiyuandParasyteare some titles that cross my mind, butNubeis more about Japanese horror stories and urban legends themselves rather than actually being a horror manga (still, it was quite...cute),Miyudid have some horror elements but was largely fantasy+shojo, andParasyteis more of a thriller I guess, although it can be darn creepy in many levels. Also, I wouldn't recommend the manhwaIsland, because however good the artwork is it's still a complete waste of traditional legends, turning ancient demons into Alien (the ones with acid blood)rip-offs, so don't you ever listen to people recommending it as an exampleof horror manhwa. (well, it can be abadexample I suppose...) Too... tired to...think more...so I'll stop for now.And please do post yourfavourite (or least favourite)horror comic books!!

Wah! Horror manga! XS Regular suspense manga already gives me the shivers.... this list might just make me go insane. I actually enjoyed Jigoku Sensei Nube and Vampire Princess Miyu. I don't know if you could count this but it's also enjoyable to read Karakuri Ayatsuri no Sakon. I remember having crossed this once.

It's more of a mystery really, nonetheless, it still gives me the shivers. ^_^

Haha, so Junji Ito confesses to being afraid of women?! His manga makes a lot more sense now, considering all the grotesque monster women they feature. The "mysteriosness" of the female of the species seems to be common material for horror stories in general as well.

I agree that Island is crap. I'm very disappointed in the storyline. It fails to make coherent sense in parts, and introduces no beleivable or interesting characters. Graphic violence is fine by me, but it has to go somewhere... Art is good though, but art alone doesn't sustain a comic.

I love Parasyte, though I guess it is more thriller sci-fi? I can't put it down! Its one of those addictive manga where I have to run out and read the next volume or I'll go crazy with the cliffhangers.

Yes, Ito Junji did admit to being afraid of women in an interview he did with the Korean press a few years ago. When asked by the reporter that he must not be scared of the dark because he can draw such horrific images, Ito answered "on the contrary-I'm scared stiff of the dark, so I can't even go to the washroom at night. I'm the type that is easily scared. Also, I think Japanese women are the scariest things in the whole world." That did explain a lot about his manga.

As for Island, what I'm somewhat disturbed is that the artist/writer duo is hailed as a representative of youth manhwa to the world. Another of their works, Shin Angyo-onshi (I think Matt might have heard of this-it was aviliable in most Tokyo bookstores), is supposedly somewhat of a hit in Japan. Yes, there is that magnificent, flashy, seductive (although somewhat cold) artwork, and the themes are taken from traditional Korean legends and folktales (although methinks, inefficiently executed to the degree that often you think that it doesn't have to be Korean legends, which are used as nothing more than a shallow gimmick--well, even an American critic ponted it out on his review of Island, so I guess it's not just me), but still it's just not what I would recommend for a representative of manhwa by young authors, even though it is the one that gets selected to be translated. In a way, it's like yaoi manga readers getting frustrated over why Gravitation, of all the works out there, had to be the one to get animated and appear as a representative of all yaoi manga.

I finally found my way here.

I've read nearly all of Junji Ito's work, and to be honest, I found most of them more funny than scary. It's true though - he has the best "grotesque" drawing style compared to all other horror manga-artists. I can utterly understand his fear of women. They really are horrible in his work.

Anyway, how about "Hino Horror"? You know, all those works by Hideshi Hino. I've read some of them, and the art is equally grotesque, though in a completely different way. I wonder about the target audience of his books though - they're thin and the style they're drawn in seems "child-like", but the violence and grotesque-ness in them seems really over-the-top for children's stories.

And there's this one which IS kinda scary - I don't know the name in Japanese, but it's called "Drifting Classroom" or something. It's a Lord of the Flies-like story where an entire school of kids are plucked right from Tokyo (along with their school) and plonked in the middle of... nowhere. Ofcourse, there comes the subject of FOOD and where to get it... I read this as an adult and I can see why it terrified my cousins when they were young. It has its fair share of disturbing scenes.

And as a plug: I have my own work from TokyoPop, "The Dreaming" coming out in December. It's a mystery-horror, so maybe the folks here would be interested. Here's the cover!
