So... a few days ago I became aware of The Comics Journal #269 and, of course, frantically searched on the internet until I found a place I could purchase it and quickly did just that. As I was reading the introduction to the Hagio interview I was reminded of something I had read a few months ago (I think it was on Wikipedia Japan) about a sequel to 11人いる (They Were 11.) The last time I came across that information I wasn't sure what the story was with it and subsequently didn't pursue it very heavily. However this time it was clearly stated to me, "In 1975 she published the gender-bending science-fiction mystery They Were Eleven!, and the next year she came out with its sequel, Horizon of the East, Eternity of the West." So here's where my question comes in... A friend of mine and I areHUGEfans of "They Were 11." I have Four Shoujo Stories, he has the large-format traditional comics and we both have the film on both VHS and DVD. So, as you can imagine, we would both very much like to read the sequel. The problem is that although I can read Japanese, he can't. So I was thinking that I might buy him a copy of the book and present him with the book and a translation for his birthday. However, I can't seem to figure out which book I need to buy to get the story. I think it's this one: 萩尾望都作品集 (14) プチコミックス http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4091780148/qid=1132499377/sr=1-15/ref=sr_1_2_15/249-6437584-4033931 But I really don't know for sure, as there's no indication on the page if that's actually the correct book. So I was hoping that someone on here (or perhaps Matt Thorn himself) could tell me which book to buy. Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any help! Sincerely, Damion Pisacane

Your best, (and cheapest) bet would to just buy the bunkoban version of "They were Eleven" as seen here. It contains both the original and the sequel.

The Hagio Moto collection you're looking at is bigger and tends to reproduce some (all?) of the colored pages, if that's a factor. (And, yes, number 14 in the series is what you're looking for)

Wow... thanks for the reply. How about "Tada and Frol's Space Street?" Any idea where I can get that?

Thanks!

The Space Street shorts are also in the bunkoban version. I don't know if they're in the collection, since I don't own that volume. (As an aside, the shorts are very cute and funny. My favorite is the one about Frol's nightmare...)

That's unreal! If I order that bunkoban I get "They were 11!", "Horizon of the East, Eternity of the West" AND the "They were 11 shorts"?!?! I'm ordering that book as soon as possible! I can't believe that that fact isn't publicised better. I would have bought the book long ago had I known this. Thank you so much for the information!

OK... here's another question then! (Incidentally... thank you so much for helping me out with this!) Is this all I need to get if I want to read トーマの心臓?

Amazon.com link

I have read quite a lot about it (particularly Matt Thorn's many comments about the book) and am very curious to read it. If that's all I need, then I'll definitely order that as well.

Thanks again for all the help,

Yes, that contains all of "Touma no Shinzou". There is a side story dealing with Oscar before he came to the school that's not included, though. It's in a separate volume, here. But you don't really need it to enjoy the story unless you become a raging Oscar fan while reading. I've read it, but I don't own it...mainly because I'm not a raging Oscar fan. :p

There's also a "pilot" of sorts in this collection, if you're feeling ESPECIALLY completist. Though it's not actually part of the story. (It's also not as good. I blame it on a severe lack of Juli...)

Many apologies for the extremely long silence. I have had a lot of stuff going on in my life, most of it pretty unpleasant. But I'm still alive, and that's all that matters.

Just a footnote. The bunko version of _They Were Eleven!_ includes a tiny yet significant change from the original. The most important was that in the revised edition, it is implied that there are female cadets, but that Tada's group is an male group (though obviously there are two characters who are neither). In the original, it was implied that the academy accepted only males. Hagio made this change for rather obvious reasons. I think the way she did it is rather clever. My translation is based on the bunko version (which came out just as I was preparing to translate the story and was feeling concerned about that very thing).
