I'm not terribly enlightened when it comes to shoujo mangaka and how they stack up in terms of "big names". I imagine Ryoko Ikeda is likely considered the Tezuka of shojo, for instance, and there are always new artists that are "flavor of the month" types who have a major hit series and then never attain that level again.I'm curious about some of the consistant mainstays of the shojo industy, who have consistantly produced major successes from the 1970s or 1980s to present. Would Akemi Yoshida be considered at that level? Saki Hiwatari?

Hi, Yoiko.

Ikeda is certainly no Tezuka. There really is no equivalent of Tezuka in shoujo manga. In the ccase of shoujo manga, it was not one artist but a generation of women artists who revolutionized shoujo manga. Of those artists, the one'ss who continue to do interesting, influential work are Hagio Moto, Takemiya Keiko, and Yamagisgi Ryohko (although Yamagish is actually a bit younger). Kimura Minori continues to do interesting work, but not in mainstream venues. If you haven't seen the July issue of The Comics Journal, you should check it out. It's a special issue on shoujo manga, and includes on article by me on that generation of artists. The issue number is #269. You can buy it online at The Comics Journal's web site.
