I know very little about western comics and I'd like to get into the genre. The problem is I don't know where to start...

So can anyone recommend comics that I might enjoy? I have very low tolerance for graphic violence and gore. I'm looking for a pleasant and relatively easy read with interesting story and great art. I'm interested in reading some class superhero stuff, but like I said, I have no clue where to start.

What are you into for Japanese stuff? That would help with recommendations. Though for the obvious, try something by Alan Moore, as he's generally considered one of the best comic writers who ever lived. For starting with him, I recommend Watchmen, which was his breakout hit (and is generally considered the best super hero story ever written), or V for Vendetta, which was much better than the movie and is probably my favorite work of his. both of these have some mild graphic moments, but they are used for dramatic purpose rather than to just gore up the comic. If you're into shoujo, you may wish to try Niel Gaiman's Sandman, which is a fantastic series that probably brought more women into reading comics than any other Western comic series (though despite the appeal it seems to have towards women, it is NOT done like a shoujo series).

Better yet, if you're into shoujo, check out Linda Medley's Castle Waiting or Craig Thompson's Blankets! There's plenty of good stuff out there. Too much to try to list here. Jeff Smith's Bone, Alan Moore & Eddie Campbell's From Hell, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Herge's Tintin series, Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis (2 vols.), Kurt Busiek's Astro City, P. Craig Russell's various adaptations of classics, Paul Chadwick's Concrete series, Colleen Doran's A Distant Soil, Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean's Mr. Punch, Frank Miller's 300, Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One....

Wow. What a weird list. I think it's time to go to bed. Good night.
